Sub Floors
It is advisable for a wood floor to be laid once any building
and decorating work has been completed as this avoids any damage
to the floor. There are many different sub floors and, whether
a floor is installed above joists, concrete, screed, over existing
boards, on chipboard or plywood, it is vital that the sub floor
is as level as possible and is clean and dry prior to the installation
of any wood floor. At FPS, we, as a matter of course, will
measure moisture content of the sub floor prior to installing
the wood floor.
Underlay
It is in many cases advisable to consider a foam underlay which
will absorb sound and provide thermal and comfort insulation
to be placed between the sub floor and wood floor.
Underfloor
Heating & Acoustic Insulation
We also have extensive experience of laying floors over underfloor
heating systems and acoustic insulation as well laying the
latter.
Floating Floors
Many floors can be fitted as a floating floor. This means that
the boards are glued at the tongue and groove not anchored
to the sub floor itself. This is a fast, efficient method and
is frequently used when fitting over underlays or acoustic
insulation.
Fixed Floors
Fixing floors is done by either secret nailing through the tongue
of the wood into suitable sub floors or when boards are glued
onto the undersurface with adhesive glue such as Stauf WDF.
Sanding
An unfinished wood floor requires sanding prior to the application
of the chosen finish.
Finishes
These days, many solid wood floors and engineered boards are
pre-finished. This means that they are coated with several
coats of UV polyurethane prior to leaving the manufacturer
providing a tough and durable finish. Pre-finished floors are
easy to install
and avoid the time, dust and other inevitable
factors associated with sanding and finishing unfinished wood
floors.
